USMLE Test Delivery Software

Parts of the USMLE are administered by computer. At present, the test software used to deliver the computer-based components of the USMLE is provided by Prometric, a division of Thomson Learning, Inc. The National Board of Medical Examiners® (NBME®) is developing new software for the USMLE as well as tests for other programs. The NBME software, known as FRED™, will begin to replace the Prometric software in the fall of 2004.

If you plan to take Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (Step 2 CK), or Step 3, you should review the full announcement on the USMLE website. You should also monitor the USMLE website for important information relating to the transition, including timing and sample test materials.
