One Year Later: Forum to Discuss Effectiveness of Medical Resident Work Hour Regulations

The American Medical Student Association will host a discussion forum, "One-Year Anniversary of Work Hour Regulations: Are they Effective?" on June 23 in Washington, D.C.

One year ago, on July 1, 2003, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) implemented regulations on resident work hours, which state that residents cannot work over 80 hours per week (averaged over four weeks).

Have the ACGME regulations improved medical education for residents? Are programs complying with the regulations? Are ongoing efforts needed to ensure that the ACGME regulations are enforced? Is federal legislation necessary to oversee residency programs and ensure proper punitive actions? How are the regulations affecting medical students?

The forum will address each of these questions and outline future actions to improve the future of resident work hour reform.
