Update on USMLE test delivery software

UPDATE: USMLE TEST DELIVERY SOFTWARE

As previously published, the National Board of Medical Examiners(r) (NBME(r)) has developed new software for the United States Medical Licensing Examination(tm) (USMLE). The NBME software, known as FRED(tm), will replace Prometric's software for delivery of the computer-based components of the USMLE (Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 3).

The transition to the NBME software for Step 3 has been completed. For Step 1 and Step 2 CK, updated information on the transition has been posted to the USMLE website. This information includes expected transition dates and instructions for practicing with the appropriate test software. If you plan to take Step 1, Step 2 CK, or Step 3, you should review the updated announcement on the USMLE website at http://www.usmle.org/news/testsoftware.htm. You should also continue to monitor the USMLE website for additional information.

The 2005 USMLE Orientation Materials CD includes both the Prometric and the NBME's FRED test software. ECFMG sends the CD to applicants when they are registered for examination. The same sample test materials using the Prometric and FRED software are available on the USMLE website at http://www.usmle.org/Orientation/menu.htm.
